Independence Special Report: Inside Nigeria’s Islamic State

…unearthing the ethnoreligious conquest of Africa’s largest democracy from Dan Fodio’s 1804 jihad to Tinubu’s 2023 jihad

In 2014, terrorist group Boko Haram’s infamous schoolgirl mass abductions spawned the trendy #BringBackOurGirls campaign but it had even more seismic unexpected effects in the global jihadi spectrum.

First, Al Qaeda, still the world’s top terror group, condemned the northern Nigerian Islamists for the mass kidnaps of almost 300 Chibok schoolgirls. Next, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) began to emulate and then compete with Boko Haram for ruthlessness. Then in 2016, Boko Haram and ISIS merged creating ISWAP (Islamic State in West Africa Province), a marriage of two groups that had alternately been ranked deadliest terrorists in the world!

My visit to Islamic State in Nigeria (ISIN) in 2023 was not to the non-state actors’ territory on the fringes of Nigeria’s border with Chad.

It was to a new and disturbing “merger and acquisition” political alliance that placed Nigeria’s democracy, the world’s largest country with an equal population of Christians and Muslims, on the precarious path to Islamization.

In February’s presidential elections, President Muhammadu Buhari found himself in the best position he could possibly hope for.

Ex-dictator Gen. Buhari ignited religious politics when he declared in 2002 that an infidel should never again rule Nigeria which was his only ideology for his subsequent serial runs for office.

Once finally in power in 2015, he perpetrated not just Islamization but “Fulanization” of the government, even to the exclusion of other northern and southwestern Muslims who’d turned an admitted “unelectable religious bigot” (their prior descriptor) to Nigeria’s worst misruler.

His ruling party’s succession candidate Bola Tinubu helped Buhari achieve his ideology of non-infidel rule by running on a Muslim-Muslim ticket (as a SW Muslim with a NE VP) which was celebrated in the north by Governors and clerics as fulfilling their jihad quest in Nigeria.

Buhari had thus set up a Muslim-to-Muslim 8yrs+8yrs succession hegemony rather than a southern Christian power rotation as was the convention in national politics.

If main opposition party PDP won, a Fulani Muslim Atiku from his paternal tribe would continue 16 unbroken years of Fulani presidential rule. If his ruling party APC won, a Kanuri Muslim from his maternal tribe would be Vice President and continue 16 unbroken years of Muslim APC rule.

Both Buhari’s parental Fulani and Kanuri stock spawned jihadi militia whose gruesome atrocities simultaneously earned them first and fourth deadliest global terrorists by the Global Terrorism Index.

Although Peter Obi was the main non-Muslim outlier who shocked the system with a third-party run, even the remote possibility of his emergence would have given Buhari another Fulani VP in power providing an unbroken Northwestern Fulani in the Presidency/VP for 33 years (from Pres Yar’adua in 2007) or an unbroken Fulani rule for 40 years (from re-inception of democracy in 1999 with NE Fulani Atiku.)

In the end, under extremely dubious circumstances, Bola Tinubu, the SW Muslim candidate of Buhari’s party was declared elected in an election that terribly divided the country’s fragile unity even further.

It would have seemed that the solitary Fulani nomadic tribe that used and abused religion to conquer fellow Muslims in jihad in 1804 and is again abusing it still to dominate other tribes they couldn’t conquer precolonialism has temporarily lost power but the reality is more sinister.

The same Southwest-North coalition that starved 1Million Southeastern Christian Igbos to death during the Biafran civil war of 1967-1970 was essentially reestablished by Tinubu (without the Christian middlebelt mostly) as an Islamic political alliance/hegemony – the ruling APC.

Ironically, the predominantly Christian Igbos who were bombed and starved to death are more developed today than the north who bombed and starved them! Power has done nothing for the north but yet the Islamic political alliance once again foreclosed the Igbos’ aspirations for the presidency via Peter Obi in 2023.

Igbos have been great contributors to national development in contrast with the north. The Fulani imperialists brought little development. Till date their militia kill and pillage infidels like they did 200 years ago except they now use bikes instead of horses and AK47s. Pillaging and looting is not a sustainable development model.

The British imperialists brought systems and institutions along with reasonable looting. Yet the Igbos who never colonized Nigeria, were egalitarian and not imperialists, have produced more value added communal and national wealth and enterprise than the Fulani colonizers.

The Igbos are a naturally prescient group whom the country has failed to optimally leverage for national upliftment. If not that SE governors have generally been the worst-performing, their region would be unmatched but still individual drive and industry has made more millionaires out of the region the rest of the country starved to death (One day that story will be told to an amazed world.)

Nevertheless it should be clear that one invading tribe cannot dominate a nation of over 500 ethnic groups like that forever. The Dan Fodio invasion of 1804 was reprised in 2014 with another invasion orchestrated by Gen. Buhari. Dan Fodio was a great tactician and Nigeria’s highly educated elite being subservient to his 200 year old expansionist playbook and his less brilliant acolytes is a testament to his enduring legacy. Buhari was incompetent to achieve his Islamist takeover until Tinubu gave him legs.

The Fulani Islamic jihad of 1804 and the British economic invasion subsequently were two sides of the same colonial/imperialist/supremacist ideologies masqueraded in religion and noble garbs.

Britain completed the failed annexation of non-Muslim tribes by the Fulanis and donated said unconquered tribes to them at the faux independence in 1960.

This faulty foundation is attributable to both the Fulani and British conspiring colonialists which contrived this country contraption. When the first Prime Minister, Ahmadu Bello vowed to dip the Koran in the Atlantic, the British were his main facilitators post-jihad and Tinubu merely brought the Atlantic to the jihadists via his political merger thus bypassing the formidable middlebelt and southeast bulwark buffering them for centuries. Who would have thought that in this day and age, the path forward for Nigeria emanating from Lagos of all places would be the ethnoreligious alliance called APC?

Hundreds of Buhari’s killer mobs during the 2011 Post-Election Violence were arrested and prosecuted. However, when Buhari came into office in 2015, they were freed from prison.

Before the 2015 elections, Buhari and co had brought in significant Fulani reinforcements from the west African subregion to saturate Nigeria and violently overtake her if he didn’t win the election. Tinubu’s Islamic alliance and President Jonathan’s conceding the elections averted the violent plan but it left hordes of armed killers deployed around the country with no war to fight.

Tinubu has now appointed another Fulani as National Security Adviser who had publicly justified their killing of Nigerians.

“Former EFCC Chairman and former Presidential candidate of the ACN, Nuhu Ribadu has stated that the Fulanis in Nigeria feel marginalised and are not happy with Buhari.

Ribadu said the Fulanis are landless and are not well respected politically. He further revealed that the tribe feels abandoned by President Buhari and are completely out of everything.

“We forget that people who are landless will continue to be a problem and part of the problem we are facing today is these people fighting to say we are part of this country. They want a place of their own where they will be taken care of, but there is resistance. That is why you see what is going on in Zamfara, Birnin Gwari and most of the places,” he said.

“You can hardly see any nomadic Fulani man that is part of state assembly or the national assembly and they form about 15 to 20 million of the population and they are marginalised. They are not in any way benefiting from what is happening in the country today.” “ https://politicalstewng.com/fulanis-feel-marginalised-are-angry-with-buhari-ribadu/

Ribadu made these claims despite the fact that at the time 90% of Buhari’s National Security Council members were northern Muslims and predominantly Fulani.

We must never forget that at his inauguration in 2015, Buhari declared that Dan Fodio was the “founding father” of Nigeria – a historic anachronism because Nigeria did not exist in 1804 jihad.

Tinubu should be blamed for sacrificing the great Oduduwa and Oyo empires to an extraneous caliphate. Excoriating Igbos simply because they celebrated election victory against him in Lagos is nothing compared with the northernization of Lagos ports etc seen over the years (Of course it’s always easier to blame the victim than the real villain.)

Additionally, Tinubu’s people deployed witchcraft, fetish and juju against Igbos and non-Yorubas in the elections in Lagos alongside violence.

Given this background, I was unsure what to expect on my visit to Nigeria’s new Islamic state weeks after inauguration. Here’s what I saw:

  • the new government in Kano state demolished a prominent sculptured roundabout built by the predecessor claiming it contained a Christian cross which is “anti-islamic.” The prior government made Kano the most extreme islamist state in the north with blasphemy lynchings and death sentences.
  • the new government of Sokoto state justified the blasphemy lynching of a Muslim man from a rival sect. Barely a year before, his predecessor had condemned the blasphemy lynching of Christian Schoolgirl Deborah Emmanuel even though her killers’ charges were recently dropped.
  • In Plateau state, 346 people were killed in three months and 32 villages destroyed by Fulanis but security forces disarmed local hunters and killed village watchmen claiming they were bandits. The prior government had appeased the killers who it appeared were now targeting the Mangu community of the new governor who succeeded them.
  • In Benue state, 25 youths were slaughtered in a massacre by Fulanis even though the new state government is from the ruling APC party. The former governor had been blamed for massacres in the state because of his opposition to the APC’s mishandling of the insecurity.
  • A Libyan-trained Nigerian jihadi convert, addressed the media from Tinubu’s presidential villa claiming that his “forces” were responsible for security more than the army. His Niger Delta militants had previously been disarmed and granted amnesty under a prior government.

It got worse. Days after winning election petition, Tinubu announced the carving out of indigenous lands in the states for building of Fulani enclaves – even where millions of victims of Fulani massacres are still displaced! His political state capture was rapidly following with physical “states capture”.

It is unclear how things will go from here but the security situation in the new Islamic State in Nigeria has not improved. This is despite the fact that Tinubu has consolidated power unlike anyone ever in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu has co-opted Muslim mujahid Asari Dokubo’s South South Niger Delta militants, influencers of North East jihadi Boko Haram terrorists, cross country islamist Fulani militia, his Southwestern thugs & legitimate Nigerian federal security forces under his control – a massive consolidation of legitimate state and illegitimate non-state coercive forces. Only IPOB and ISWA are outside his control.

If Buhari’s 2015 influx of foreign Fulani fighters into Nigeria was the second invasion after the 1804 jihad, then Tinubu’s power consolidation in 2023 is the second amalgamation after the British colonialists’ of 1904. Tinubu imposed a Muslim Muslim ticket that even Buhari did not do and building Fulani rugas cross country that even the fanatical Fulani bigot Gen. Buhari didn’t do!

Tinubu was not good for Lagosians as Governor- a global cosmopolitan city ruled by thugs mafia-style – the same way the amalgamation of north and south Nigerian colonies into one nation was not good for Nigeria.

British imperialism, for all its pretensions versus intentions did do some basic good but what does Tinubu’s Islamo-mafia coalition portend and intend for Nigeria?
As Nigeria marks 63 years of faux independence, it is clearer now more than ever that the once proud and noble Oyo empire has been conquered and surrendered to northern caliphates that never conquered Yorubaland by a mafiosi who conned his way to power.

His advocacy led to the naming of Kudirat corner by Nigeria house in New York, the US designation of Boko Haram as a foreign terrorist organization and International Criminal Court Prosecutor’s determination of crimes against humanity in Nigeria amongst others.

Army Defends Generals Accused Of Diverting Troops’ Allowances

The Nigerian Army, on Monday, refuted reports alleging the diversion of the Ration Cash Allowance of troops deployed to secure Chinese nationals working at the ongoing Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project in Niger State.

In a report by some online media platforms last week, some troops alleged that they had not been paid their RCA for three months by their erstwhile Commanding General Officers, Maj. Gen. Alabi and Brig. Gen. Jamiu Jimoh, accusing them of diverting their allowance.

However, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Monday, said the service under the current leadership had zero tolerance for any form of financial misappropriation among other actions which could dampen the morale of troops.

He noted that after investigating the claims in the report, the service found that the allegations were incorrect.

Onyema explained that the allowance was paid in tranches, noting that the last part had been on February 28, 2023.

He added that while the next tranche was being processed, the service had paid the affected troops allowance from March to June.

He said, “Preliminary investigation reveals that troops deployed to the Chinese company in Niger State have always been paid in tranches by the NA on receipt of the funds from the institution concerned.

“Accordingly, the last tranche payment of RCA by the affected institution for the troops deployed, elapsed on February 28, 2023. While the next tranche of payment is being processed, Army Headquarters has paid the troops covering the period March 1 to June 30, 2023, in a bid to ameliorate the operating conditions of the troops and keep them at par with deployments elsewhere.

“Additionally, to cushion the effect of the tranche mode of payment, provision was made to feed the troops daily and this has been a routine. The troops’ RCA was, therefore, not diverted by any of the senior officers named in the publication or anyone else, as wrongly portrayed.”

Revoke Obasanjo’s Traditional Titles, Yoruba Group Tells Monarchs

The Yoruba World Congress (Worldwide), a socio-cultural group of Yoruba descent, has called on traditional rulers in Yoruba land to revoke all chieftaincy titles bestowed upon former President Olusegun Obasanjo. This request comes in response to Obasanjo’s recent actions at an event in Iseyin, Oyo State, where he ordered some traditional rulers to stand up and sit down, leading to public outrage.

The Yoruba World Congress (YWC) has urged traditional rulers to boycott any event where Obasanjo is present or has control over the microphone until he offers a public apology to the offended traditional rulers. The group emphasized the importance of upholding the prestigious cultural heritage and respect that traditional rulers deserve.

Furthermore, the YWC has called on the National Assembly to consider enacting a law to establish a Federal Ministry for Traditional Rulers attached to the Presidency. This ministry’s purpose would be to manage, protect, and preserve cultural values and heritage, separate from state-level ministries, in order to ensure that royal fathers receive the respect they are entitled to.

In a statement released on Monday, the Yoruba World Congress Worldwide expressed its rejection and dissociation from Obasanjo’s actions and called for a constitutional review regarding traditional councils. The group reiterated its demand for a sincere and remorseful public apology from Obasanjo to the traditional rulers and the entire Yoruba race. Until this apology is issued, the YWC advised traditional rulers to walk out of events involving Obasanjo, decline invitations lacking nobility, and unite in safeguarding their cultural heritage by revoking Obasanjo’s Yoruba chieftaincy titles.

Nigeria Records 210 New Cholera Infections, 10 Deaths

Nigeria has recorded 210 new suspected cases of Cholera infections and 10 ‘suspected’ deaths across eight states of the federation from 31 July to 27 August.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed this in its latest monthly situation report on Cholera, covering Epidemiological (EP) weeks 31 to 34.

The latest report shows that the suspected cases and deaths of Cholera in 2023 have decreased by 63 and 67 per cent respectively compared to what was reported at Epidemiological week 34 in 2022.

The report revealed that as of 27 August, Nigeria had recorded 84 suspected deaths and 2,860 suspected cases across 25 states, representing a Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 2.9 per cent.

Cumulatively, it shows that six states: Cross River (718 cases), Katsina (302 cases), Bayelsa (265 cases), Ebonyi (227 cases), Niger (136 cases) and Abia (118 cases) account for 62 per cent of the suspected cases in 2023.

Highlights
In the reporting month, the report shows that of the eight states that reported 210 suspected cases, Zamfara State in the North-west topped the infection chart with 190 cases, followed by Kano and Bayelsa with seven and five cases respectively.

Also, Bauchi, Niger and Borno states reported two cases each, followed by Gombe and Adamawa states with a single case each.

NCDC noted that 21 Cholera Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) were conducted with nine positive results (Zamfara – 8 and Bayelsa – 1) while 26 stool culture tests were conducted with three positive results.

It added that the national multi-sectoral Cholera TWG continues to monitor response across states.

Cholera
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the Vibrio cholera bacillus.

The disease spreads through contaminated food and water, reappearing periodically in countries like Nigeria where people are unable to secure access to clean drinking water and ensure adequate sanitation.

It is a preventable and treatable epidemic-prone disease. The number of cholera cases tends to increase with the outset of the rainy season.

The risk of death from cholera is higher when treatment is delayed. It is very important to visit a health facility if anyone has watery diarrhoea and vomiting symptoms.

Security Agents Thwart Kidnapping Plot in Katsina Community

Security forces thwarted a kidnapping attempt in the Tijjani Malumfashi Housing Estate of Katsina State over the weekend. Around 50 armed kidnappers arrived in the area late on Saturday night, creating fear among residents with sporadic gunfire. Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the spokesperson for Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.

According to the statement, the kidnappers strategically spread throughout the neighborhood, conducting house-to-house operations before security forces arrived. Unfortunately, six individuals were forcibly taken from their homes, but the timely arrival of security forces prevented further abductions.

Among those rescued was Judge Alkali Saidu. Governor Radda commended the Malumfashi Divisional Police Officer, Bello Umar, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes for their heroic efforts in repelling the attack. He stressed the importance of joint operations by security agencies to combat criminal elements in the nation.

Radda also highlighted that this successful response operation, carried out collaboratively by the Malumfashi police team, military units, and local vigilantes, should serve as an inspiring example of bravery for security personnel across the state to follow.

Police Begin Search For Kidnapped Benue Commissioner

The Benue State Police Command has said that it has begun a search for the kidnapped state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Matthew Abo, who was abducted on Sunday by gunmen.

The spokesperson for the state Police Command, Catherine Anene, disclosed this to PUNCH Metro over the phone on Monday.

She said that the command was doing everything possible to rescue the kidnap commissioner.

When asked about the efforts the CP was making to rescue the commissioner, Anene said, “Definitely, policemen have been on the operation since the information got to the command.”

Abo was Sunday night kidnapped by some gunmen who invaded his house at Zaki Biam, headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner was said to have been at home with his family members when the gunmen came on four motorcycles and found their way into his living room.

During the incident, an eyewitness explained that the kidnappers came on four motorcycles, ordered everyone in the house, including the commissioner’s wife and children, to lie face down before taking their target away to an unknown destination.

“The abductors forced the commissioner to sit behind the rider of one of the motorcycles while a gunman sandwiched him.

Meanwhile, the state Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, said on Monday that the abductors of the commissioner had yet to establish contact with the victim’s family members.

Alia, in a statement issued by his media aide, Kula Tersoo, said that gunmen had a day before the incident, kidnapped a former chairman of the local government, Iorwashima Erukaa.

He said, “While Abo was kidnapped by gunmen in his Sankara home at about 8pm, Sunday, September 24, 2023, Mr Erukaa was also taken away by a yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

“The kidnappers, who took the duo to undisclosed locations, have made contacts with the family of Erukaa but have yet to make contacts with Abo’s family.”

Tersoo said that the governor, who described the act as barbaric, had detailed security agencies to immediately commence operations to ensure the safe release of the duo.

“He (governor) has called on the people of the state to remain calm, as his administration will do everything to make the state safe for all,” the statement added.

The Sankera axis, which comprises of three local government areas; Logo, Katsina-Ala and Ukum, is the major flashpoint of criminal activities such as kidnapping and killing in the past few years.

Earlier, Tersoo confirmed the abduction of the commissioner.

The CPS said, “Yes he was kidnapped. Unfortunately, he was kidnapped in his country home in Ukum LGA, around 8pm on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

“He was home with his family, children and his people when the armed men came in. They forced him on a bike.

“We received the unfortunate development and His Excellency, Governor Hyacinth Alia, has already directed and detailed the security operatives to ensure his safe release from the kidnappers’ den.”

Secret Negotiation: We Have Enough Facts To Expose You, Zamfara Gov Fires Back At FG

Governor Dauda Lawal, on Tuesday, said the Zamfara State Government has enough facts to expose the agents of the Federal Government behind the secret negotiation with bandits.

The governor, who had consistently ruled out the option of negotiating with bandits, had earlier raised the alarm that the Federal Government had entered a secret dialogue with the criminals.

But the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, accused the Zamfara Government of politicising security.

However, in a statement Sulaiman Bala Idris, his spokesman, issued on his behalf, the Governor said he had evidence exposing some Federal Government agents involved in the negotiations with bandits in Zamfara.

He added that the Minister of Information should have conducted a thorough investigation before discrediting the State Government.

The statement read in parts: “We sought clarification from the Federal Government regarding the sneaky negotiations with bandits carried out by some of its agents without recourse to the State Government and heads of Security agencies in the State.

“We have facts and evidence on what had transpired between these agents of the Federal Government and the bandits during the negotiations in several places across Zamfara.

“It is disappointing that the information minister discredited our claim without verifying it first. What is expected of him as a professional is to collaborate with relevant authorities to substantiate the claim’s authenticity.

“Zamfara State Government respects protocol and established authority. We would not come out in the media to start exposing the names of the Federal Government agents involved in the covert dialogue with bandits.

“We want to clarify that those individuals leading secret negotiations with bandits in Zamfara are politicising insecurity, not the State Government.

“The Information Minister’s statement claiming that there were no negotiations between government officials and bandits in Zamfara requires further clarification. We have already exposed a few locations where such talks were held with bandits, such as Birnin Magaji, Maradun, Mun Haye, Ajah, Bawo, and Bagege.

“Negotiating with bandits in Zamfara is a grave mistake we cannot afford to make. It is not the solution to the problem and only encourages and emboldens the criminals. We urge the Federal Government to take a firm stance against such activities and investigate the motives of those who engage in them.”

ACF Calls for a Total Purge of Banditry and Terrorism In Nigeria

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, urging them to completely eliminate the issues of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism within the country. This call to action comes in response to the recent abduction of female students at the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State.

In a statement released on Sunday by Professor Tukur Muhammad Baba, the spokesperson for the ACF, the forum expressed deep concern over the abduction incident. While official details about the attack remain limited, eyewitness accounts indicate that it was a well-coordinated assault carried out by both bandits and terrorists.

The ACF highlighted that the female students were specifically targeted, and the criminals were well-prepared, managing to escape with an as-yet-unknown number of victims despite efforts by the Nigerian Army.

The forum vehemently condemned these abductions and called upon the Federal Government to do everything in its power to secure the safe release of the kidnapped students.

Furthermore, the ACF urged the Federal Government to overhaul Nigeria’s security apparatus and develop comprehensive, multifaceted strategies to address security threats affecting schools and communities across the nation. These strategies, according to the ACF, should be aimed at eradicating the scourge of banditry and terrorism on a nationwide scale.

Wave of Terror Strikes Northern Nigeria: Gunmen kill 14, Kidnap 60 In Attacks

In a series of tragic events in northern Nigeria, gunmen carried out attacks that resulted in the loss of 14 lives and the abduction of around 60 individuals. On Sunday, in Zamfara state, northwest Nigeria, eight people lost their lives in two separate communities. This distressing incident occurred just days after armed individuals abducted numerous individuals from a local university in the same state.

In another disturbing incident, suspected Islamist insurgents ambushed a convoy of vehicles under military escort in the northeast region of the country. This attack led to the tragic deaths of two soldiers and four civilians. The attackers also set fire to five vehicles and made off with one truck.

President Bola Tinubu has yet to outline a comprehensive strategy to address the pervasive insecurity plaguing the nation. Meanwhile, his economic reforms, which included the removal of a costly fuel subsidy and the freeing of the naira currency, have resulted in a higher cost of living, causing frustration among citizens.

Residents reported that on Sunday morning, gunmen attempted to attack an army base in the rural Magami community of Zamfara but were repelled. Zamfara has been severely affected by the disturbing trend of kidnappings for ransom by armed groups referred to locally as “bandits.”

The attackers, organized into three groups, targeted both the army base and the communities of Magami and Kabasa. Their assault involved motorcycles, firearms, and other weapons, with indiscriminate gunfire causing chaos and fear. Tragically, the majority of the victims were women and children.

During the attacks, at least four people lost their lives, and numerous others were kidnapped, according to witnesses and residents. Regrettably, both the police and the army have not provided official statements or responses to these distressing incidents.

These attacks in the northwest region are emblematic of the prevailing insecurity issues in Nigeria. In addition to such incidents, Islamist insurgents continue to carry out deadly attacks in the northeast, while gangs and separatist groups target security forces and government installations in the southeast. Tragic clashes between farmers and herders persist, claiming additional lives and exacerbating the nation’s security challenges.

Why I Refused N20m Bribe – Jos Kidney Harvest Victim’s Husband

In this interview, a Jos-based businessman, Busari Kamaru, tells James Abraham how his wife’s kidney was allegedly harvested by a fake doctor during a surgical operation

What is your name?

My name is Busari Kamaru. I’m a resident of Rikos community in the Jos North Local Government of Plateau State.

How old are you?

I’m 51 years old.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a businessman and I do car repairs as well.

You are currently at the centre of a controversy surrounding an alleged harvesting of your wife’s kidney by a fake doctor during a surgical operation. How did it actually happen?

What is happening at the moment to my wife could be traced to 26th January 2018. On that faithful morning, my wife had severe abdominal pain and stomach ache. She wanted to go and pay for my son’s school fees that same day. Seeing that she was in pain, I offered to take her to one hospital so that they would just do scanning to know what the problem was, because I don’t like just buying drugs to treat something whose cause has not been determined. So, I took her to this Murna Clinic and Hospital within the community. There, I met Dr Noah Kekere, who is in charge of the hospital. He told me he was going to conduct a scan on my wife which I agreed to. My wife proceeded into his office, and then he conducted the scan and told me that my wife had appendicitis and that he will have to do an operation on her that same day. I refused because I was not prepared for anything operation. The man told me that the appendicitis was about to burst and that he needed to conduct the operation, if not, we may lose my wife. I told him that my wife had never complained about any stomach pain and that this one just happened that morning.

What happened after that?

At that moment I did not know what to do again, especially as the man said the appendix might burst if we did not do something urgent.

So, I excused myself and rushed outside the hospital to call my friends and my sister to inform them about the situation. They unanimously advised that I should just go ahead with the operation. I did not know what he had told my wife…when I entered the office my wife started crying saying, ‘’haba, because of how much? Let him just do it now”. Because of the way the doctor explained a lot of things, he said to me in my dialect that is Yoruba language. And I said no problem. Let him just go ahead. He charged us N160, 000. I told him that I don’t have that money and he asked for now much I could afford, and I told him N80, 000 and we agreed to carry out the surgery. He asked me to go and get the money so that before he completes the surgery. He told me the operation would start around 12noon. I called my mother and my wife’s mother before the operation. My mother came and I went into town to go and get the balance of N40, 000. I brought the money around after 12 and they had already wheeled my wife into the operation theatre. Around 5 pm that same day, the man called me that I should enter the theatre and see what was happening. What they were doing. When I entered the theatre, I saw my wife with all her intestines left outside. I ran outside because I could not bear to look at the scene. So, around 8 pm, they brought my wife outside and pushed her inside the ward. We spent a week at the Murna Clinic and Hospital. After the surgery, my wife could not stand up very well for almost four months and before he discharged us, he said I should be buying swan water for my wife to be drinking every morning. So, that is how I continued buying swan water for my wife for almost four months. After about six months, my wife started complaining again about the same abdominal pain on the right side. She complained that there is something like a wound she was feeling inside her stomach. So, I took her back to the hospital. My wife went back to the Murna clinic and hospital and laid her complaint. Another scan was conducted, and this time, he prescribed some drugs which I paid N17, 350 to buy that fateful day. I will never forget that day. After that, my wife came back home and she was relieved for almost one week, but about two to three weeks later, the stomach pain started again. She managed the pain for about one month before she went back again. This time, we decided go to the General Hospital for us to know what is happening. On getting there, they told my wife that her right side kidney is no more there and that it has been removed. My wife came back and told me.

I was shocked because my wife who has four children has never undergone any operation even during childbirth. Who could have removed her kidney? Murna Hospital was the only health facility that had carried operation on her because of stomach pain. So, we decided to go back to the hospital where the operation was conducted.

So, when we got there, at the reception, they informed us that doctor Kekere was in the theatre. I kept on shouting at the hospital. I then called a friend who said I should leave the hospital and report the matter to the police station.

What happened next?

That is how I went to the police station in the community. I met the DPO and narrated everything to him. The DPO gave me a DCO and two inspectors to go and invite the doctor. When the doctor arrived, they showed him the results that my wife did at the Jos University Teaching Hospital which showed that she had no right kidney. Doctor Kekere acknowledged that the result showed that there is no right-side kidney. He said maybe my wife was born with one kidney. We asked how he knew she was born with one kidney. He now said that we needed to conduct CT scan again. He argued that if we conduct a CT scan, it will show us whether my wife was born with one kidney or the kidney was removed. So, we went to Fertile Ground Hospital to do the CT scan. He recommended Fertile Ground and we took my wife there. After the scan, a lady came out and met my wife saying, “Madam, who did this to you. Why did you allow them to remove your Kidney? My wife said she did not permit anyone to remove her kidney; she told her doctor kekere operated on her for appendicitis and that she was not aware if her kidney was removed or not. We confronted the doctor and he could not give any explanation but kept shouting. That is when the police officer introduced himself and asked the lady saying “we came here to verify a lot of things, we want to know whether this woman is with one kidney? The lady replied and said that “this woman was never born with one kidney”. So, the police officer now asked her “how do you know that?” She explained that based on their scan, the other kidney was removed. On getting to the police station, they gathered there, trying to negotiate with me.

It was the said doctor and I said no to any form of negotiation. I told them I will not say anything yet because my wife has a family and I have a family, and we need to consult them first whether they are going to agree on the negotiations because I’m not agreeing with all the things they were telling me.

What were they telling you on the negotiation?

I went to the DPO of Nasarawa Gwom community to complain. His name is Timothy. The DPO called me the following morning that he wanted to see me personally. On getting there, the man told me that since yesterday till this morning, some people have been calling him for negotiation. But he did not know what to tell them because they are offering him a certain amount of money.

He asked me what my position on the matter is because they calculated the time they removed my wife’s kidney, they said it was sold at a 6 million naira then. But now, it is worth 20 million. They said if they want to pay the money for the kidney, it will be 20 million naira. I said “look officer, I am not the type of person anyone can buy with money. Let this man come out and own up to me that he removed my wife’s kidney. What do you want me to do?” But the man (Doctor Noah Kekere started begging me, saying that the deed had been done and that I should just temper Justice with Mercy. He asked what I want him to do for me. I told him that I don’t need anything from him except to return my wife’s kidney from wherever he took it to.

The Commissioner of Police asked him if he will take my wife abroad to replace her kidney, but he couldn’t say any word. He started saying “Jesus Christ”. So, he was taken to the guard room and detained.

How long have you been married to your wife?

We have been married since the 26th November, 2005. She has four children.

How Is she doing now?

She is presently in my house. She is forty-five years now and we need help to save her life because the pain is still there. They have been telling me that only three teaching hospitals in Nigeria can help us. It’s either UCH Ibadan, or Lagos University Teaching Hospital or University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Nsukka, Enugu State. So, I’m considering taking her to Ibadan first for proper treatment.

Have you been treated personally at the Murna Hospital where your wife’s kidney was alleged removed?

No, no, I’ve never been there. It was my mother that used to go to the hospital. My mother convinced me that the man is a good doctor and that people have been talking about the man that he is a very nice person.

How have you been able to handle the issue in the community?

The Yanshanu Community chairman called me. That is Alhaji Jamilu Baba. He started investigating this issue because everybody was shocked because we took this doctor as a good man in the community. Nobody knows he wasn’t a qualified doctor until now. Anybody with small headache runs to the hospital and he cures them even without any payment. Even newborn babies were delivered in the hospital. So, nobody suspected that this man was never a doctor. It has been happening also that after operation, people will die in the hospital and nobody ever suspected this man.

Are you satisfied with the way the police is handling the matter?

For now I will say I am satisfied, especially with the Nasarrawa Police station. The DPO of Nassarawa is a man of God. He tried his best and refused to compromise. He was offered a lot of money to kill the case but he refused. That is why the matter was taken to the Commissioner of Police. And the Commissioner of Police is also trying his best. He doesn’t want to compromise because he was totally angry.

So what are your demands?

I want justice. This man has been collecting money from me for the past five years now, every month. And I have been spending money on my wife. Now that I have discovered that this is a problem of kidney, where will I get money to take care of my wife? Every day, I wake up with fears of losing my wife. I don’t know what to do. Where do I get money to take care of this woman? We are talking about huge sums of money for another kidney. Where do I get money to take her abroad for treatment? I don’t have such amount of money. They were calling millions of naira. Where do I get it from? Do you know that last year when I called this man (so called doctor) and told him enough is enough; I will take my wife to another hospital, this same man discouraged me and told me that he was going to conduct another operation on my wife?
